How To Look Good In Your Wedding Pictures.

3 Simple Tips

Every couple aspires to look picture-perfect on their wedding day but unfortunately the camera doesn’t fancy everyone and most people get hackles when they pose for a picture (me included). When it comes to wedding photography, awkward grins and shifty poses are common. If your wedding day is fast approaching, be prepared that your photographer (ME!) is going to snap a boatload of photos. I love to capture moments as they happen but I will always give a little direction to help you guys out during your couple portraits. Try these little tips and tricks to conquer the ingrained camera phobia and get the most out of your wedding photos:

1) Relax and Enjoy (Most Importantly).

I wanted to start with this one, I feel it’s the most important. Your wedding is the happiest day of your life and it should show on your face. If you gaze and drool over gorgeous wedding photographs on various blogs, know that those couples are people just like you. So, what makes those photos so enviable? Those couples are relaxed and are too busy enjoying themselves to worry about anything. Sometimes, during the formal pictures it can take a while to get through them and perpetually plastering a grin on your face can be hard going, just relax your face to show off your most natural smile.

2) Get away from it all.

Not really a classic tip for looking good but if having your picture taken in front of the guests makes you feel nervous and edgy, you will look nervous and edgy. Have your wedding photographs taken at a secluded spot so that you can let your guard down and be yourself. In addition, being comfortable with your photographer is the key to flattering photographs. Get to know your photographer before the big day. I meet every single one of my couples before the day and usually start the initial meeting with a hug! Get familiar cos we're going to spend a lot of time with each other. After the ceremony, I always start with the family formals and keep these to a minimum and then send everyone away except for the bride and groom. The 3 of us head off to another spot away from everyone. This allows you a bit of down time to just be together. It’s usually the first quiet moment you get with each other as husband and wife.  This is where I get my best shots. I let you guys have your moments with little to no direction from me at all.

    3) Less is more.

We live in Scotland. Scotland has beautiful landscapes and amazing people but we have terrible weather. We’re known for being pasty white and personally, I think the pale look is beautiful but we have been known to go a bit mad with the old fake tan and/or foundation. Embrace the pale!!!!

When brides ask me about fake tan I advise against it every time and then I tend to go on to advise them about my less is more mantra. My whole life is based around keeping things as easy and as simple as possible. Here's something that is consistent with every bride I have ever photographed.....they look amazing. Brides always look amazing! I have never seen an ugly bride and the less is more mantra fits perfectly with this. The camera pics up on uneven skin tones and 9 out of 10 times, it’s because there’s too much make up or fake tan. You are beautiful, you don’t need to go crazy with the make up. Keep it classy. Plus you still wanna look like you on your wedding day.

The key thing in all this, is to just enjoy your day. Don't worry about things and trust the vendors you have hired. Laugh with your friends and family, enjoy the beautiful food at your dinner and dance the night away.
